Chapter 10:

Chapter 10 begins with a certain discovery made by biologists in Albany, New York, these biologists went into a cave to do a bat census only to find dead bats. The dead bats were covered in a strange white powder. Many years passed before scientists found out that the powder is actually called Geomyces destructans, a cold-loving and deadly to bats fungus that was accidently imported from, most likely, Europe. Darwin stated that animals cant travel long distances, however, now humans have imported thousands of animals far away from their natural habitats. This Anthropocene period, has some characteristics of this period that are striking due to the transportation of these animals. Now, when a new species moves to a different environment it either does nothing or the new environment kills off the species. The results of moving a species to a new location are unpredictable, “ The movement of species around the world is sometimes compared to Russian roulette. As in the high-stakes game, two very different things can happen when a new organism shows up” (pg 201). There are no more natural barriers because of humans and this is now called the “ New Pangea”. There a now invasive species that are hurting the environment around them. The fungus is an example of these invasive species and even what happened to the frogs in Panama is another example of the disastrous results importing other animals can be. We humans are altering nature by allowing other species from different places to be imported to other habitats.
