The chapter starts off with Kolbert visiting the Institute for Conservation Research in San Diego, there she is shown a vial of the remains of the poˊouli, a recently extinct, black-faced honeycreeper bird. She is also shown other vials of extinct animals in the “ Frozen Zoo”. Due to Congress passed the 1974 Endangered Species Act, people have gone through a lot to protect the poor creatures on the verge of extinction. She then visits a veterinary hospital and saw the Hawaiian crow named Kinohi, Kinohi is also part of an extinct species and all 100 of them live in captivity. Kinohi was sent to San Diego because he refused to mate with the other Hawaiian crows and so they had to get his sperm in order to artificially inseminate the other Hawaiian crows. This just shows the lengths people are going in order to prevent extinction. We too will suffer from this mass extinction, “ the logic behind this way of thinking follows: having freed ourselves from the constraints of evolution, humans nevertheless remain dependent on the earth’s biological and geological systems” ( pg 267). We depend on this earth just like other animals so if it’s in danger then we are in danger. Everything in the world is connected in this huge system we call life. Some say that we will be able to stop extinction but some scientists say that global warming is already a threat. In the end, we humans have no control over the sixth extinction and we will continue to fight against it.
