Chapter 6: The Sea Around Us
In chapter 6 we are introduced to an island called Castello Aragonese, located in the middle of the Tyrrhenian Sea. This island was created due to pressure between the African and the Eurasian tectonic plates. Due to that release of carbon dioxide, Kolbert visits the island in the winter in order to investigate carbon dioxide levels in the water surrounding the island. While investigating she meets two marine biologists, Jason Spencer, and Marina Cristina Buia. The trio goes scuba diving and Kolbert is shown large green bubbles that were rising from vents at the seafloor. Readers learn that this dilemma is dated back to the industrial revolution. The industrial revolution allowed for the burning of fossil fuels. Kolbert believes that the average world temperature could increase up to 7 degrees Fahrenheit because of the current carbon dioxide levels. Not only does this lead back to the global warming dilemma but it will impact oceans and much like the glaciers that impacted back then, it will begin to ruin environments. The melting of glaciers leads to different temperatures which result in the death of species. (P) I predict that global warming will occur again throughout different chapters in different environments. In fact, it will continue to get worse. (Q) I also wonder if there are alternative ways to do factory work without burning so many fossil fuels?
